There is no need to support the lower half of the baby's body because newborns simply float by supporting the baby as suggested. The walls and the curved shape of the bottom of the tub also support the baby's weight with the help of the water.
When the baby reaches approx. 12-16 weeks or once the baby can support their own neck, the parent can have both hands free to do the washing. Please note however, that even if the baby is already strong enough to stand, it is important the baby is watched at all times during bath time and not left alone!
Does the Tummy Tub® help with sleeping problems?
Yes, a warm and relaxing bath is always soothing if sufficient water at the correct temperature is used. Ensure the water covers your baby's shoulders.
Does the tummy tub® help if baby has wind / colic?
Yes, first you should massage your baby's tummy with some oil in a clockwise direction. Then give your baby a bath in the Tummy Tub®, which will help relax the abdominal muscles and relief discomfort.
Is it a problem if my baby wants to stand up in the Tummy Tub®?
No, because of the buoyancy of the water it will encourage your baby to learn how to stand.
What temperature should the water be?
The optimum water temperature should be anywhere between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius to provide a soothing bath
for baby. The temperature can be taken with a baby bath thermometer, and for extra safety you can use the "elbow test".
The surface water area of the Tummy Tub® is designed in such a way that it can keep water warm for about
20 - 30 minutes.
Till what age of baby can I use the Tummy Tub®?
This varies from baby to baby. Although the Tummy Tub® was originally developed for babies from birth to 8 months, many parents tell us that their children love being in this familiar and trusted environment for much longer!
What is the best way to hold my baby during bathing?
The first thing to do is to prepare all the bathing supplies needed before putting water in the Tummy Tub®. Keep them in arms-length reach so there is no need to leave the baby unattended! Check the water temperature and slide the baby in with feet first.
The baby can be suppported in three ways when using the Tummy Tub®. The parent can either support the baby at the back of the neck, just below the chin or through holding them under the armpits. In a floating position, the parent can put one hand at the back of the neck. Once baby is relaxed, the washing can be done by the free hand. The other hand can support the baby so that mouth and nose will not accidentally get into the water.
How do I clean the Tummy Tub®?
To be hygenic it is advised that the Tummy Tub® is cleaned before and after using it. Simply rinse / wash it with a mild detergent and dry it before being stored in a dry place. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Drying is important so it would not encourage bacterial growth because of moisture.
How much water should I use?
The amount of water needed for the Tummy Tub® to be used depends on the size and weight of the infant. The important thing to remember in order to keep baby from feeling cold, the water level should cover baby's shoulders. Newborns should 'float' in the tub with the parent either support the baby at the back of the neck, just below the chin or holding them under the armpits. Once baby is relaxed, the washing can be done by the free hand.
Although older babies can have less water for their bath, it is important to ensure shoulders are covered so that baby's chest and back will not be exposed to cold air after being wet. It prevents baby feeling cold and ensures more enjoyable bathing time!
Can I use a bucket instead?
Often people comment "can I not use a normal bucket?" or "what makes the Tummy Tub® different from a bucket"?
Buckets are not always safe for use for bathing babies as their original design was not intended to be used for such purpose. Unlike normal buckets, the Tummy Tub® materials and design guarantees that it is safe to be used for infants and does not react to bathing supplements. Buckets may have toxic pigments or substances that could be harmful for babies especially when they are newborns.
Buckets are often not sturdy and have sharp edges and corners - especially where the handle is attached, which can lead to scratching the baby's sensitive skin. An ordinary bucket may be too small or too big for a baby, making them more uncomfortable while bathing.
Unlke buckets, the Tummy Tub® is also transparent, allowing full view of your baby during bathing time.
